I'm a musician and educator in the Kansas City area. I've performed with the Kansas City Symphony, Kansas City Lyric Opera, Kansas City Ballet, the Kansas City Civic Orchestra, and the Kinnor Philharmonic. I teach younger (and older) people in my studio of private students and have presented master classes at Washburn University and Missouri Western State University.
I currently perform with the Fountain City Brass Band. Fountain City is a British-style brass band performing in the Kansas City area. The group was founded in 2002 and I've been involved since 2008.
As a performing member, I've been involved in contest victories at North American Brass Band Championships in 2008, 2009, and 2010, the U.S. Open Brass Championship in 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, and were the first American band to win the Scottish Open during the band's U.K. tour in the autumn of 2009.
In May 2014, the band participated as a featured ensemble during the International Tuba and Euphonium convention in Bloomington, Indiana. Our Friday night concert included solo performances by Steven Mead, Øystein Baadsvik, and David Childs. I was described as "one hell of a bass trombone player." There may have been alcohol involved in that statement.
I'm performing on an Edwards dual-Thayer bass trombone with a dual-bore slide, circa early '90s. Sooner or later, I'm going to upgrade to... something. Buying this horn used as I did, I didn't have a hand in making sure that it was completely tailored to the sound I wanted. And even if I had, I've been playing this horn since my undergraduate days, which means I sound a lot different now compared to when I started.
